As the laboratory technician (II) of the Biology Department, Matt Howard supports and oversees the day to day operations of the activities primarily in the biology teaching laboratories. He provides instructors with technical support, maintains a well-organized, safe working environment with equipment in proper working order, and provides guidance in the use of that equipment. He prepares chemical solutions for students to use and provides safety protocols to ensure the proper handling of those chemicals. In order to improve the success of the labs being conducted, he works with instructors to troubleshoot solutions to problems or enhance quality control. Through the process of working with undergraduate lab assistants to help prepare and test experimental materials, he has the opportunity to train young scientists in standard operating procedures and good lab technique.
