Dimity Peter began her career as a rehabilitation counselor for the Australian government, a position she held for 12 years. She worked as full-time faculty in the School of Special Education and Disabilities Studies at Flinders University in South Australia. In that role, she had the opportunity to teach in Thailand and the Middle East.
Until fall 2013, Dr. Peter was the program director of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. Since her arrival at UMass Boston, Dr. Peter has acquired three US Department of Education grants totaling $2.5 million.
Dr. Peter has worked as a consultant on issues relating to inclusion, advocacy, and disability throughout Australia and the United States. She has also published book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles related to the inclusion and employment of individuals with a disability. Her current research focuses on the experience of women with disabilities from Islamic countries.
