Research & Impact
The Department of Chemistry provides students at all levels with opportunities to receive thorough education and training in contemporary concepts and practices of chemistry and biochemistry. Our faculty members are active researchers and scholars who are committed to the vigorous acquisition of new knowledge, as well as dedicated mentors of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. Our research and scholarship span all fields of chemistry and biochemistry, but our overarching theme is research in green chemistry, broadly defined as chemistry related to environmental, health, and sustainability concerns.
Commitment
Consistent with the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Mission Statement, we seek to offer opportunities for professional development at the highest level of achievement to both traditional and nontraditional students from varied social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, who may have a variety of previous educational experiences, and who characteristically combine university education with work and family responsibilities. We are especially dedicated to serving students who are first in their families to attend college, and to increasing the numbers of women and other under-represented minorities among the ranks of professional chemists and biochemists.
Research Focuses
The Department of Chemistry currently has 11 research-active faculty members, whose scholarship extends across all major areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Five tracks are offered in the PhD program, two interdisciplinary PhD tracks include members of the Department, and the Department also offers vibrant MS and BS/MS programs. In addition, all BS chemistry majors are required to complete a capstone research project during their senior year that includes at least one year of mentored research. All research labs are located on the 3rd floor of the Integrated Sciences Complex. Our research is organized into six research tracks. We also participate in two interdisciplinary programs.
