Biography
Lee Hargraves, PhD, is Interim Director of the Center for Survey Research. Dr. Hargraves is a leader in the development and use of survey methods to create quality measures that assess health care from patients’ perspectives. For over 25 years, he has led efforts to develop and evaluate surveys to assess people’s medical care experiences in many settings, including ambulatory care, inpatient care, cancer, and rehabilitation.

As Senior Survey Scientist for the Picker Institute (Boston), he oversaw design, development, evaluation, and implementation of patient experience surveys. In this position, he was a co-investigator on the Harvard University team of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) project. He worked as a Senior Health Researcher at the Center for Studying Health System Change (Washington, DC), managing two rounds of the nationally representative household survey and insurance surveys, convening panels of experts to choose survey topics, cognitively testing questions developed for the survey, and monitoring survey fielding. He directed two rounds of the Qualified Health Plan survey for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Dr. Hargraves’ research has contributed to national efforts to document racial and ethnic disparities in health care. Dr. Hargraves currently participates in the fifth round of the CAHPS® project, where he is a member of the Yale University team and serves as co-chair of the CAHPS Instrument Development Team. He is Associate Professor in Family Medicine and Community Health at University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, and an adjunct professor in the UMass School of Public Health, UMass Amherst
