Urban Scholars Program Overview
Urban Scholars is a year-round college access program dedicated to empowering underrepresented and economically disadvantaged high school students from Boston. Through a comprehensive approach that includes tutoring, after-school classes, college readiness programs, field trips, and personalized advising, we aim to prepare students for success in higher education. A key component of our program is an intensive six-week Summer Institute hosted at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Our Mission
Urban Scholars is committed to empowering underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students from Boston high schools in their pursuit of excellence within STEM fields. Through tailored mentorship, academic support, and engaging activities we create dynamic learning experiences. Our dedication to inclusivity ensures that every student, regardless of background, has opportunities to explore and excel in higher education and beyond.

How We Support Our Scholars
We equip students with the skills, mindset, and motivation needed to reach their full potential. Through a structured sequence of after-school classes, tutoring, and summer courses, we build essential academic skills, foster self-motivation, and encourage a commitment to achieving long-term goals. Our curriculum enhances Boston Public Schools' education by helping students improve in core areas like math, reading, writing, and critical thinking—key skills they need to thrive in higher education.

Our Vision
We believe that the future progress of society depends on nurturing the talent and potential of our youth. By providing students from our partner schools in South Boston, Dorchester, and Roxbury with college preparatory resources, we empower them to take control of their own growth, build successful careers, and become leaders in their communities.

Impact and Success
Over the last 38 years, Urban Scholars has helped more than 2,100 students achieve their academic and career goals. In the past five years alone, 93% of our graduates have gone on to college, with 82% enrolling in four-year institutions. Of those, 77% have either graduated or are still pursuing their degrees.

Participating Schools
Our program partners with several high schools in the Boston area, including Dr. Albert D. Holland High School of Technology, TechBoston Academy, Excel High School, Dearborn STEM Academy, and Boston International Newcomers Academy.
